Do fire codes and building codes vary by location?
Yes. Requirements can vary by country, province or state, municipality, adopted code edition, building use, construction date, renovation history and authority having jurisdiction. Always verify the current local requirements.
Can the calculators tell me how many detectors or sprinklers I need?
No. The calculators accept quantities or broad allowances for budgeting. They do not determine device type, number, spacing, placement, hydraulic demand or code compliance.
What is the difference between a smoke detector and a heat detector?
A smoke detector responds to combustion products, while a heat detector responds to temperature conditions. The appropriate device depends on the environment, fire strategy and applicable requirements.
Why might a room become smoky before an alarm or sprinkler operates?
The room may use heat detection rather than smoke detection, a small or shielded fire may not heat the ceiling sufficiently, or the system may have another design or fault condition. A real incident requires qualified investigation.
Do sprinklers activate from smoke?
Automatic sprinklers are heat-actuated. Individual sprinklers generally operate when sufficient heat reaches them; visible smoke elsewhere does not itself activate a sprinkler.
